50 alternatieven voor WordPress, Joomla en Drupal

Vandaag de dag is WordPress zonder twijfel het populairste contentmanagementsysteem (cms) ter wereld. Waar de vroegste versies ervan voornamelijk ontwikkeld werden voor het opzetten en onderhouden van een weblog, kon WordPress in latere versies al snel ook worden ingezet voor andere typen websites. Daarmee ging het de concurrentie aan met twee andere populaire systemen: Joomla en Drupal.

Dit open-source cms-trio wordt nog altijd actief ontwikkeld, zowel door officiële ontwikkelteams als door vele vrijwilligers. Menig hostingprovider biedt tegenwoordig bovendien automatische installaties van deze systemen aan, waardoor je na een druk op de knop direct op je cms kunt inloggen, en nauwelijks meer omkijken hebt naar de technische werking ervan.

Tot nu toe geen redenen om een ander cms op te zoeken, zul je misschien denken.

Waarom op zoek naar alternatieven?

Zowel WordPress als Joomla en Drupal zijn met recht populair: het zijn systemen met een rijke geschiedenis aan doorontwikkeling, en worden over het algemeen dan ook als stabiel en betrouwbaar beschouwd. Zoals met ieder cms, zijn voor elk van de drie echter ook nadelen op te noemen.

Onderhoud en updates

WordPress ontvangt bijvoorbeeld relatief veel updates. Dat geldt in potentie ook voor de vele plug-ins die geïnstalleerd kunnen worden. WordPress maakt het je tegenwoordig weliswaar gemakkelijker om deze updates te installeren, maar al met al zul je toch regelmatig tijd kwijt zijn aan onderhoud.

Complexiteit en originaliteit

De vele mogelijkheden die de drie systemen bieden kunnen overweldigend zijn voor iemand die een eenvoudige website wil maken. Diezelfde complexiteit maakt ook dat ze veel rekenkracht nodig hebben om hun taken uit te voeren. Dat kan een website langzaam maken, met name in omgevingen waar veel websites de rekenkracht van een enkele server moeten delen, zoals bij shared hosting.

De populariteit van de systemen in combinatie met de inbegrepen standaardthema's die het uiterlijk van de website bepalen, betekent in de praktijk ook dat veel websites op elkaar lijken.

Elk cms heeft zo zijn voor- en nadelen, en het ene is dan ook niet per se beter dan het andere. Wel is het ene systeem beter geschikt voor bepaalde typen websites dan het andere. Het kan dan ook de moeite waard zijn om eens enkele alternatieven te bekijken. Wie zich wil onderscheiden, of gewoon eens wil experimenten met een minder bekend contentmanagementsysteem, heeft in ieder geval mogelijkheden te over.

Onderstaande systemen zijn alternatieven voor specifiek WordPress, Drupal of Joomla, oftewel: allen zijn gratis te downloaden, en zijn in PHP geprogrammeerd waardoor ze met de meeste webhosting pakketten gebruikt kunnen worden, al dan niet in combinatie met een database. Vraag voordat je tot installatie overgaat eventueel eerst aan je hostingprovider of zij het betreffende cms ondersteunen.

Er worden relatief vaak updates vrijgegeven, die gelukkig eenvoudig te installeren zijn.

Croogo is gebouwd op het snelle en stabiele CakePHP MVC framework. Het biedt net als WordPress de mogelijkheid om blog-berichten en losse pagina's van elkaar te scheiden, te categoriseren, en eenvoudig te bewerken met een WYSIWYG-editor (What You See Is What You Get).

Fork heeft zich als doel gesteld om een zo gebruiksvriendelijk mogelijke omgeving te creëren voor het bouwen en bijwerken van je website, en is geschikt voor zowel beginners als professionals. Het systeem heeft ingebouwde statistieken, en is eenvoudig uit te breiden met allerlei gratis apps en thema's.

Koken is een cms voor creatievelingen zoals fotografen, ontwerpers en doehetzelvers die de nadruk op hun werk willen leggen. Het beheerpaneel maakt het zeer eenvoudig om foto's te uploaden en te rangschikken, en met de inbegrepen thema's beschik je al snel over een professioneel ogend portfolio.

Textpattern is een flexibel cms met een grote en vriendelijke community die ondersteuning kan bieden. Zodra je het hebt geïnstalleerd, kun je direct beginnen met bloggen, maar het systeem is in principe geschikt voor elk type website, en uit te breiden met honderden gratis te downloaden plug-ins en templates.

TYPO3 is een zogeheten "enterprise" cms dat veelal wordt ingezet voor middelgrote en grote websites. Net als bij PyroCMS, kun je met een enkele installatie van TYPO3 meerdere websites beheren. Het systeem heeft bovendien een ingebouwde zoekmachine die automatisch al je content indexeert.

Zenphoto is ontwikkeld voor websites waarbij multimedia centraal staat, en is daarmee uitermate geschikt voor persoonlijke websites van kunstenaars, ontwerpers, fotografen, filmmakers, muzikanten en andere creatievelingen. Een Nederlandse vertaling van het systeem is beschikbaar, evenals ruim 200 extensies.
